I geg to dissent on this, Carlos.  You are correct to point out that
physical leakage will cause a system failure but most selenium cells were
properly sealed at least after the First World War.  Almost all failures
are caused by breakage in the rather intricate mechanical linkages these
meters require.  I have some 1930's selenium meters which still function
properly, and several others which were broken when I purchased them --
such as my Metrawatt LC60 Leicameter -- but which only required attendance
to the mechanics, the cell itself still being good.  For that matter, the
cell on my father's Weston 715, from 1938, is still functional and
accurate, though the mechanicals have required George Milton's attention on
one occasion.
