My favorite paper for contact printing was Velite, similar to Velox but no darkroom necessary. It could be handled under subdued lighting, like a shady front porch, where I would make a glass sandwich using an ordinary picture frame and take it into sunlight for the exposure. After an appropriate time, the frame would go back into shade and the Velite developed in trays using chemicals from a Kodak Tri-chem pack.
It was a sweet way to spend a summer morning (Rollei content: that's how I printed my first Rolleiflex negatives).
Velox, OTOH, I associate mainly with a darkroom job I once held in which it was used to print from half-tone negatives. That, too, was fun.

Eric,

Nah! That wasn't magic. In my case, it was poverty. I contact printed
until I could afford an enlarger, and could use Kodabromide paper.

The entire philosphy of shooting the image size you want to print and contact printing was exactly my cup of tea... you compose and light in the camera and the contact print is full of tone and detail... 2-1/4 x 3-1/4 is just about ideal...

Goodness now I wish I had my old Kodak printer and a few boxes of Velox
in different grades... that was magic...
