I am very impressed with the quality of their printing, paper stock also
excellent. I've done four magazines with them. Try it! (for my scans, all from
film)

Bill,
Do the photos come across well? I am thinking mostly of black and white.

I've tried to deal with the older pictures by publishing them in magazine
form using Magcloud and distributing the results to interested parties.
Reprints always available it would seem and the photo contents are in the
"cloud" for anyone to share. There is the advantage of captioning and even
narrative in the magazine format.bill

It's a tough question.
I wound up scanning key images and uploaded to a dedicated google photos page
that anyone with interest had access to.
If you're going to the trouble of trying to distribute archivally, you wrestle
with all the factors you mention. There really is no archival digital process
that's local, including USB sticks, HDs and other local media. I'm betting that
google will be around in 20/30/40 years, or at least long enough such that a
family member could download the images and make a different choice if events
seem to require it.
Best wishes and hope your family appreciates both the images and your efforts...

Thank you for the comment Eric,
One of the things that I realized with my father's photos (and why my earlier
plans would not work) is access. My sister was also interested in his photos
but as she said "what will I do with them". She has not been involved in
photography and for her handling mounted slides etc. is a problem. She would
need to get a scanner, learn how to use it and so on to access the images. It
seems to me from comments made by friends in similar situations, that whoever
takes possession of the photos gets the rather large task of scanning
everything and passing copies to the other family members.
There is also the editing aspect. My father did choose the 'good' images and
it appears threw away the lower rated ones. But even still there are around
1300 mounted slides to scan and assess, then negatives and digital files.
There are plenty which have no meaning/value to either my sister or myself,
trips to locations I can't even guess at, work related images, and photos with
friends and/or colleagues I don't know.
I am thinking of following Carlos' advice and making photobooks, then following
Hans' idea and making 'special' USB sticks but in my case storing just the
photobook files. This would make things much more accessible to my family,
nothing to scan/edit/handle just take your copy of the photobooks, and your USB
stick(s) and you are done. If something happens, just reprint a book from one
of the USB sticks.
I very much doubt my films will last long one I am gone.
Thank you,

Check that you have family members who are interested.
When my mother passed, the only family who were interested in legacy images
were so old that they won't be around much longer!

I have been working through my late father’s various slides/photos and in the
process realising that my plans for passing on my photos to my heirs are not
the best. I am sure others on this list have thought of this and I was hoping
others could pass on their ideas.
Thank you,
