All,

Well, the consensus is clear enough. I ordered the on sale Epson 4990 and hope to have it up and running in a week or so.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

Allen,

I too have the Epson 4990 and it is certainly fine for smaller prints or web use.

I also bought a 3rd party film holder and ANR glass from http://www.betterscanning.com.

These hold medium format film much more flat than the Epson holder especially if you use the ANR glass. He also now offers adjustable height models to allow for focus variances from unit to unit and a wet mount holder!

Carlos,

Thanks for your response. A plurality seems to be pointing tin the direction of a 4990. Maybe I'll buy one today :-)

I have an Epson 4490 and 3.4 Dmax is more than enough
to scan films and prints (4.0 Dmax could help for 35mm
film), I bought the VueScan software (the basic
version) and it really helps for the scanning process.
Anyway the original Epson scanning software is very
good too and considering the price reduction for the
4990 I'd buy a 4990 today.-

All the best

Allen,

Primarily the 4990 has Digital ICE that works for
both film and print
scanning. The 4490 only work with film. The 4990
has a higher Dmax of
4.0 compared to 3.4 of the 4490 which should
result in a better scan.
The only other difference is really the 4490 can
do 35mm and 2 1/4
scanning while the 4990 can do film up to an 8x10"
sheet.

Hope this helps.

Peter,

Thanks for your reply. May I ask, what does the
4990 do better than
the 4490?

Allen,

I have an older Epson and find it does the job.
I am considering an
upgrade to the newer 4990. I think these are a
very good value and
deliver excellent quality at affordable prices.
