Allen,

Primarily the 4990 has Digital ICE that works for both film and print
scanning. The 4490 only work with film. The 4990 has a higher Dmax of
4.0 compared to 3.4 of the 4490 which should result in a better scan.
The only other difference is really the 4490 can do 35mm and 2 1/4
scanning while the 4990 can do film up to an 8x10" sheet.
