I, too, have been connecting the camera directly to the computer for over 10 years. Once the battery did run low and I just got an error message. I corrected that and continued on. Besides, I never erase the pictures in the camera until they are successfully copied into the camera.

Hi Doug,I never, ever connect the camera to the computer.I'm not sure why you think this is bad. I know you've explained that if it runs out of battery it could be a problem. But, the files on the camera areopen for read only. It's only when writing something that there can be a problem. So, if you are just copying the files from the camera to your computer there should be no problem. I've always connected my camera directly, and yet to ever have a problem, even when the camera runs out of power.
