It's been a long time since I've seen the name "Nemacolin". Translated, it means "bloodworm" and was the name of a Delaware Chief who blazed the trail that later became part of the National Road. "Nemacolin State" was one of the suggestions voted on by students at Frostburg State Teachers College, MD, during the 1962 - 1963 school year to replace the school's name. IIRC, another name was "Mountain State". It was overwhelmingly decided to keep "Frostburg". Somehow "Bloodworm State" just didn't catch on. In 1963 it became "Frostburg State College" and more recently it became "Frostburg State University".

Frostburg's year book is named "Nemacolin".

BTW, among my own ancestor is Daniel Greathouse who was one of the leaders in the death of Chief Logan and his family. From another line of ancestors I have a fair amount of Cherokee blood.

Thank you, Elias. Are you a member of your state's Defense Force? At the least, you can do that! My folks came over centuries before yours and one of my grandfathers was "chased around the tree three times before he was killed and scalped" by Native American Agrarian Reformers. So be it. I have good friends who are descended from the Native American Agrarian Reformers who scalped my forebear. (I do STILL have an issue with the Shawnees, but that is a tale for a different day!)

The Appalachian frontier was a wild time. Watch UNCONQUERED, a 1947 Cecil B DeMille epic. Ward Bond plays one of my fourth-great grandfathers. It is a cool thing to watch. I have hiked most of the Nemacolin Trail over the years. My blood is in those hills.

You are the first person I have ever met who was rejected by the Coast Guard. Good for you! You are unique!

Marc
