Zeiss owned the patent on hard coatings and was hardly going to share it with Leitz, though Zeiss did license it to JSK and Voigtländer. So Leitz had to use a drip-coating method which left a soft coating. These were used on both external and internal elements.

The haze on 1950's Leitz lenses, though, is a product of the outgassing from the lubricants. Open lens. Clean lens. Reassemble lens. It is that easy.

I have had almost all of my pre-1960 Leitz lenses hard-coated by John Van Stelten at Focal Point, in Colorado.
