I believe that I remember Don Goldberg telling me years ago when he worked on my old 5 cm screw mount Summicron that almost all of the screw mount lenses had soft coatings inside. Cleaning would reduce the coatings.

I bought some Leica SM gear with 2.8/5cm and 4/9cm Elmars that are both fogged inside. Happy shooting this weekend. Jan I suspect this is just haze. I've found a lot of lenses develop a haze inside, I don't know the cause but it may be from lubricant or from the anti-reflection paint. Usually this stuff comes off with plain lens cleaner. The problem is getting to the internal surfaces. I think Leica uses retaining rings on both ends so they may be easy to get off. The arrangement of the lens mount of almost all lenses with spherical surfaces is such that they are automatically centering. Elements can be lifted out using sticky tape like Scotch Tape or masking tape. The Elmar is a fairly simple lens but has two air spaces both of which should be opened. Unless this lens had very early soft coating it can be cleaned without any damage to the coating. It should not need re-polishing unless the surfaces have been scratched or etched by fungus. -- Richard Knoppow Los Angeles WB6KBL dickburk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx --- Rollei List - Post to rollei_list@xxxxxxxxxxxxx - Subscribe at rollei_list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'subscribe' in the subject field OR by logging into www.freelists.org - Unsubscribe at rollei_list-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the subject field OR by logging into www.freelists.org - Online, searchable archives are available at//www.freelists.org/archives/rollei_list
