As a kid attending NYC public schools in 60s, Riis and Hine were very
much a part of the standard curriculum...

What would a press photog in the 1880s/90s have shot with? Camera? Lens?

I don't know for certain but likely view cameras. Some of Hine's stuff, child workers in the mills etc., are 5x7s, some 8x10s. I expect some historical research would find the answer. To be a bit political because this is is something I care about, I think people's noses should be rubbed in this stuff because we have folks around now who would like to return to the industrial slavery of the 19th century.
