Hi Daniel (and Richard),
I, too, have spent the lockdowns scanning old film and also doing so on my
Epson V500, and I’d, as well, like to hear why you prefer the VueScan to the
Epson software. I’ve never had any issues with it but am curious to know if
I’ve been missing out on something.
Best wishes,
Dave

Subject: [rollei_list] Re: OT: Film Scanners
During this Covid craziness, I have been scanning a lot of my older films. I
have a Epson V500 and using the Epson software the performance looks good. It
compares favourably to the scans provided by my local “pro lab” on (I guess) a
Noritsu scanner. I also have an older Epson 4870 which is a more featured
scanner, but it is much slower as it uses a light source which needs to warm
up, compared to the V500’s LED source. I also find the V500 has better
consistency with colour than the 4870, but otherwise have not done a direct
comparison.
Daniel could you comment on why you find VueScan superior to the Epson software?
Thank you,
Richard Urmonas

Silverfast was included with my Braun, but I haven't activated the license (I
am hoping to be able to return the Braun). I've been using VueScan for I don't
know how many years and I haven't felt the need for anything else. It is far
better than the included software with scanners (Epson, Canon, Nikon (in the
day)).

I bought a V600, but it was not as good as my old Epson 2450, so it just sits
on the shelf.
I'm hoping to get a V850. It's not perfect, but believe me, the dedicated film
scanners are not worth it.
If I can fix some "shades" along the Braun negative carrier for MF, it just
might be ok. Not better than my old scanner, but newer.
Best,
Daniel

Hi Everybody,
I have been using an Epson V600 and for my purposes finding that quite good.
Most of my scans have been with the Epson software but I am also now using
Silverfast 8. Anybody using Silverfast? I find it a bit of bear to learn, but
need to use it more as well.
From time to time I use photographic scanning, using a digital camera and macro
lens. I made a light table using a sturdy box and the lighting panel from an
old HP scanner. This provides a very good light source and produces quite good
results. A film carrier for 120 and 35mm was made out of mat board (as used to
mount photos for framing) and the film can be moved rapidly from one image to
the next. I use Affinity Photo to convert and edit the images to positive. The
editing is more laborious than with the V600.

Wise choice, Jan.
I am in almost the same predicament. My Epson Perfection 2450 Photo is two
models older than your 4870. It hasn't given up the ghost yet, but I see the
handwriting on the wall and am trying to replace it. The Braun is NOT the
answer. Don't go there. I am trying to find my way out of it. The same goes for
Reflecta (just a rebranded Pacific Image, both of them, not made by Braun or by
Reflecta).
My issue with the Braun is very uneven lighting across the negative. It is
simply not suited for photographic purposes.
Notice the uneven lighting up and down the left and right edges of the scan by
the Braun.

The Epson V850 is a much better bet.

Daniel,
The Braun medium format filmscanner you linked to is way beyond my
“Schmerzgrenze” [pain threshold] for what I am willing to pay for a scanner.
I bought a used Epson Perfection 4870 PHOTO last March, which is one model
above the scanner I had in Vermont until 2012. It came with all the fim holder
from 35mm to 4 x 5 and worked flawlessly for about half a year until it
suddenly conked out.
I can’t find anybody in Germany who is willing to work on it. And the Epson
service gives me the classic “built-in-obsolescence” response: "No more parts,
buy a new one!" Very annoying.
Unfortunately, due to Corona, there are also no repair cafés open right now,
where I could give it a try with some guidance. The current Epson scanner with
the same features is Epson V800 or V850.

Edit: I am 100% sure that the Braun / Relecta medium format film scanner is not
better than my 18+ year old Epson Perfection 2450 Photo flatbed. In fact, it is
not even as good.
I'll post comparison scans of the same Rollei negative later. The major problem
is internal reflection.
Don't waste your money.

Thanks Jan.
Yes, I too was finally satisfied with the lens after I saw that portal. I
haven't succeeded all that often, but I have acquired a monopod now, so I hope
that will help.
I do a lot of business with Fotoimpex. I really appreciate their dedication to
analogue materials. I have a Swedish supplier with the same focus, but not
quite the same extensive inventory.
On these, I took a reading for 400, but then opened up a tad, probably about a
third of a stop. I think most of the time I could take a reading for 1/250 and
just use 1/200 and the same for the other speeds.
I developed another roll last night taken in flat light, even one at the
inevitable kitchen table at home, 1/25 @ 2.8.
One thing about Fomapan 400 is that it wants to roll back up. Right now it is
rolled against the tendency and stuffed inside the tube left over from a roll
of kitchen paper towels. A few hours usually helps.
This is the first roll I scanned with my new scanner, a Braun FS-120 film
scanner. I bought it from:
https://scandig.com/filmscanner/braun/braun-fs120.html ;(around München I think).
The Reflecta MF-5000 comes from the same OEM (Pacific Image ...) but Scandig
gave the Braun a decisive edge, so I went with it. The price is the same.
Not 100% sure it is worth the extra cost compared to a flatbed. My Epson 2450
is at least 18 years old (I used it in my first paw 2002) and I was starting to
feel a little worried about getting a good replacement. I tried the Epson V600
(cheap) but it went back on the shelf. I figured that if I tried the V850 and
was unhappy, I'd be edging up to the cost of a dedicated film scanner. They
have been coming and going out of stock, so when it came back, I went with it.
Have a good year, and be safe!
