So - is this a great deal? Everything I need to be up and running (printing) with minimal hassle? Easy to use kit? Reasonable price? Fantastic price? I know the quality is there, seems the DeVere is one of the nicest models made. Why am I still not convinced...?

Where do you live? For Germany the price for the whole setup wouldn't be very low. Recently a complete Laborator 138S with CLS1000 was sold for 250 Euro at ebay.de, and this was the top-of-the-line version of the L138 (1kW lamp power, shutter, stabilized power supply, the best Durst negative holder TRINEG etc.). I was offered a DeVere 507 with color head for 400 Euro. The rest of the outfit would cost some 2-300 Euro used via Ebay.

The Devere _is_ the best there is, a Durst is crudely made compared to it. OTOH I thought hard about swapping my G139 (thats the lower part of the 8x10" L184 with the upper part of the L138S) equipped with the CLS1000 and TRINEG with the DeVere 507 Color, but decided to keep the G139. I have a whole cupboard of spare parts, all mixing boxes, several lens holders etc and would have to buy everything again. The Durst is good enough for all practical purposes... not lathe-like precision like the DeVere, but good enough.

You don't say what kind of L138 is offered. If it is equipped with a CLS301 (not CLS300!), get it. You won't need any other enlarger in your lifetime, and the CLS301 uses easily available 120V/300W halogen bulbs. Get a Leitz V35 for 24x36 negs, and your lab will be complete.
