As for Nikon F lenses... those early SLR lenses were not exactly known
for their high performance, with a couple of exceptions which were
carryovers from the RF days. Canon overtook Nikon around 1980 in the
pro and the consumer market, mostly on the strength of their beautiful
FD lenses.

There is a ton of fascinating stuff there.
I have an Exakta, my first 35mm camera. Needs to be
overhauled now. There were more lenses available for the Exakta
than probably any other camera. The left handed wind makes more
sense if you realize it was intended as a waist level camera.
When I was in my early teens I subscribed to all the popular
photography magazines (including Popular Photography). Seymor's
Camera (was it a pun on see more?) in New York always had full
page ads featuring Exakta. At the time they seemed very exotic
and expensive. I should get mine restored since I have a lot of
lenses and accessories for it but for practical use it is no
competition to my Nikon F.
