Soft proofing has an upfront cost, but is, over the long haul, less expensive than ordering hard proofs all the time. Printing presses are moving to soft proofing (on LCD monitors) usually two 30" monitors that together accommodate a full press sheet.

Getting accurate colour is a bit fiddly to set up at first, but once done, it is easy to use.

I should disclose that I am on a Kodak software team that, amongst other things, produces colour soft-proofing software for the graphic design industry.

Hi Eric,
Is her monitor actually calibrated to a 'real' colour workflow as opposed to the monitor simply being calibrated to the Apple / Adobe internal calibration? By real colour workflow I mean complete for on screen colour accurate proofing with supplied ICC profiles for the particular printer's output device as well as tagged scans that describe the source and target colour spaces, plus all the software / hardware (icc profile generator / colour monitor colourimeter) that handles this. Additionally, is her workspace in a neutral grey area with controlled lighting and a hard proofing booth? If not, then she is not really colour calibrated, but instead working with general 'close enough' colour. For accurate colour, LCD and the aforementioned software / hardware is way to go.

Printing presses worth their salt use LCD monitors at the printing press to soft proof - often two Apple 30" LCD monitors one on top of the other to get a full size press sheet.

CRT monitors were okay for colour and some are quite good, but LCDs are better.

Hi Todd -

Tagged ICC profiles... yes... This is one of the largest/most prestigious publishers in the world. Hard proofing booth... yes, several. Controlled color workspace... I'll have to check. I doubt very many shops have true properly controlled workspaces... doesn't take much to get that wrong...

How useful do you find soft proofing?
