I uninstalled Spybot altogether.I also was having trouble with Adobe (pdf) reader 8 trying to update itself everytime I tried to read a pdf file and then getting a Windows error.
Fortunately I keep a spare hard disk that is a clone of a successful stable XP set up (made using free version of Acronis software from the Maxtor/ Seagate site). You do need to have a Seagate/ Maxtor hard disk connected to the system (even as an external) somewhere.
I fitted this hard disk and am ok now.I immediately formatted the removed hard disk and made this a clone of the successful one so am back to having a spare ready to go..
E***y were selling empty hard disk enclosures (caddies) that had the electronics and cabling so you could power a spare hard disk and connect it via a USB cable as an external drive. The Seagate/ maxtor Acronis software enable you to diskclone.
Finally a very knowledgeable IT professional's advice in the organisation I worked for before I retired said:
"Get a stable working PC system and maintain the status quo.NEVER upgrade any software unless you actually have a problem it is going to fix.
Turn Windows automatic upgrade off, use a free virus checker like AVG.Use a program like startup inspector to stop all sorts of programs loading at startup and slowing your computer down"
