I must dissent. Alkaline cells work quite
well: the resulting difference from mercury
cells is around 1/3 stop, easily accommodated
even by chrome emulsions. Change them once a
month or so to avoid the discharge problem
(alkaline cells lose power slowly, unlike mercury
cells, which can lead to increasing discrepancy in readings).
