I think it was assumed it would be used under very dim light conditions, dim enough to make focusing with the rangefinder in the normal way difficult. It never occurred to me to try an LED in the thing but it might be brighter than the original bulb and have a considerably longer life. I suppose I may have used a Focuspot but don't remember ever doing so. I have one in my 4x5 Pacemaker kit.
