I was RA but respected all the US's

After Nam I was assigned to the Directorate of Military Support at the
Pentagon when the draft ended around 1972. The army was sizing down and I
remember they came through one day and told us enlisted that we had two
weeks to re-enlist or be discharged. It would have been a whole year drop
off my enlistment. I re-enlisted because I had no plans at that point and
student loans would come due the minute I got out. I re-enlisted and
shortly ended up assigned to NATO in Turkey which I loved.

What it was like when all the draftees left? - It (among the enlisted
swine*) was like all the brains had left. The all volunteer army was awful
then and got worse. I was discharged in 1977 at Fort Lee, VA where I was
assigned to the Army Logistics Management Center. I remember the last
processing out stop was in a huge building filled with guys in rumpled new
fatigues. Oh jeez, I though, I'll be here all day! But I took a chance, I
was in class A's and approached the woman officer way up front and asked
"Lieutenant, are all these guys getting honorable discharges?" "Nope", she
said "just undesirables and medicals." "In that case", I asked, "since I'm
getting an honorable discharge, can I cut to the front of the line?" "Yes
Sergeant, I think we can arrange that" she said and handled my mustering out
herself.

After talking to the guys who were US, I decided to go RA.
