Hi John,

I certainly don't avoid digital photography! I haven't been able to avoid
it for over 30 years...since I have been design digital imaging equipment
for over 30 years. But, one thing I have is perspective on its'
capabilities, and its' image fidelity (since I do spend countless hours
evaluating it).

Good lenses are still good lenses...and even digital needs good lenses to
look good. So I don't agree that good lenses aren't relevant.

Regards,

Austin

  Hi Austin,

Everything you mentioned regarding film vs. digital is true more or less.
I don't know how common it is to simply write over previously made images,
but I'll take your word for it.

But I find it true and difficult for Rolleiflex users to accept the fact
that one can not avoid digital photography.
If one is seriously involved and provides photography for a client or
organization one must almost certainly employ digital photography or get
left behind. Sacrocanct as the qualities of Schneider and Zeiss once were,
today they are almost irrelevant.

  Hi John,

I know MANY people who have had digital files disappear, or become
damaged. Even after backing them up and taking every precaution. I've also
seen them look great on the little preview screen for those that "chimp",
and the files them selves be unusable. I've even seem the cards go bad
right on the spot...at the shoot. Of course, these are all exceptions, but
so are the problems with film. But, none of these issues have a thing to do
with mishandling. That's a whole other set of issues that clearly exists.
Common digital mishandling is simply writing over images that weren't meant
to be written over. That can't happen with film, unless you leave the
leader out (35mm). But, film can clearly be mishandled (storage,
development etc.).

Both film and digital have their issues, and neither is "better" in an
overall sense than the other. It really comes down to a matter of
preference more so than one being "better" than the other.

  Regards,

  Austin

    Hi Austin,

The question was put forth as: imagine if Capa's D-day photos were
digital. What then?

The story has been told and it is well known that Capa's five or so
rolls of film of the D- day invasion were ruined because of a wrong
temperature setting on the film drying cabinet. All I am saying is that
digital files do not require a film drying cabinet ergo nothing is ruined in
this fashion.

Yes, digital files can be mishandled.

I suppose too one could slit one's tongue with the razor while shaving
if not careful.
But are the chances of that occuring?
Althought I do hate it when that happens. YIKES!

    John
