There must be a slight horizontal 'misalignment' to create the 3D effect.

If you look at a telegraph pole - for example - against the edge of a
building. When you close one eye and then the other, you will see the
position of the pole change in relationship to the building. This is what
gives us the ability to see in 3D and to estimate distance. The two film
frames have that same 'shift'.
