Bush got 11% of the black vote in 2004; McCain got 4% of the black vote in 2008.

Actually, they did. The news media skewed their reporting, but, yes, a higher percentage of blacks seem to have voted for McCain in 2008 than had voted for Bush in 2004, though the difference was minor. Since 1950, Blacks have very slowly been turning Republican -- at tht time, the average was around 3% and is today around 10%. And the election of Black Republicans to office has had an effect on this. You cannot look to a single election, in any event: you need to amass all of the many, many elections held in the US on the local, state, and national level, and must compare the data over decades. Snap-shots tell us very little.
