Subject: [rollei_list] Goerz serial numbers
All this talk of serial numbers reminded me that I have a
Goerz lens which came out of a process camera with no
information on it except the serial number - not even
focal length. Anyone able to offer any hints? Richard? I
don't have the lens with me but I can get the numbers
when I get home.

I have a partial list of Goerz serial numbers. Send the
number and I will try to date it.
If it came from a process camera its probably an
Apochromatic Artar although Goerz made some other process
lenses. the Apo Artar was the most widely used process lens,
19 inches being the most common focal length. Red Dot Artars
date from around 1955 or 56 and differ from earlier versions
mainly in being coated and in being adjusted for other than
1:1 magnification in some cases. All of these guys are
exceptionally sharp. While optimized for 1:1 or somewhere
near it, the type has corrections which are very stable with
distance so they perform very well at infinity focus if
stopped down a little.
Coverage is rather narrow, the catalogue infinity focus
value is around 45 degrees, but this is for process work
where performance is very critical. For view camera use the
coverage somewhat larger, an image circle about equal to the
focal length at infinity. A 12" Artar will cover an 8x10 at
infinity but shows some loss of sharpness at the corners. A
14" or longer lens is a better choice for this size format.
When used for close objects, the coverage is, of course,
larger.
