If you cocked the shutter first and then changed the shutter speed to 1/500th you did the inverse sequence, it's necessary to set 1/500th first and then to cock the shutter, some Compur shutters have a dedicated spring for 1/500th, Richard has a good explanation about it. My 2.8C and Rolleicord IV have shutters that need to be set 1/500th before to cock the shutter, I use a trick to set 1/500th if the shutter is cocked, I release the shutter with the lens cap on the lens, then I set 1/500th and activate the double exposure option to cock the shutter, this way you use the same frame ; the double exposure option only works with film loaded in the camera.
