I have to assume they were sleeved to protect them from grit on the glass.
Just recently I came across several rolls of very dry tightly-rolled
color negatives and cut them and put them into sleeves in my binder.
They were very angry with me at the outset, but in a week or so they
became perfectly flat and docile.
