Thanks Thor!

I think I have been confusing Xcode with X11, the X Window system and Gutenprint. I have to use X11 and Gutenprint with Gimp. It's Gutenprint that is not set up for Firewire and I have to use a USB printer cable when using Gimp. So does Rosetta allow the old Mac classic stuff to run on the Intel systems then? Thanks again - I realize this is somewhat off topic.

Umm,

Xcode is Apples development environment (for writing applications, etc).

Drivers are not 'mounted' by Xcode. Some hook into the kernel via 'kextload' (kernel extension loader), but that's something completely different. And if Xcode didn't support Firewire, a lot of Apple developers (and apps, and external hardware) would be in trouble....

http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/technotes/tn2006/tn2163.html has an overview for building universal drivers (PPC/Intel). Similarly, a 64 bit compatible printer driver needs to be developed by Epson to work natively in 10.6. The problem isn't 32/64 bits in this case, but PPC/Intel specific code.

Since you needed Rosetta, that would indicate that the driver is still targeted to PPC CPU's, meaning Epson should have (long ago) created a universal version (providing native Intel compatability). That would run directly under Snow Leopard, without any issues.

Hope this helps clear things up.

Cheers,
Thor

Just wanted to pass this on in the event folks have the same problem. I installed Snow Leopard OS 10.6 today and found my Epson Stylus R2400 printer wouldn't work. One has to install "Rosetta" from the Snow Leopard optional software and then download a new driver from the Epson 'drivers and support' web site. All is fine so far. However, I have been using a firewire cable to connect this printer. Under the new OS & driver one cannot use firewire. It has to be a USB printer cable. I think it has something to do with 'Xcode' which Epson is using to mount their drivers under OS 10.6. I know I had a simpler situation with Gimp which also uses Xcode. It seems the Xcode end doesn't support firewire. If I hadn't had that experience I would still be scratching my head as the firewire/usb situation is not discussed anywhere. This to me is a big bummer because firewire is a bit faster and I don't have an extra USB port to hook up the printer. I have written Epson about this - we will see. At least it is working ok - so far.
