the bidder might be like me and some others I have seen when just learning
to use ebay.  I didn't understand ebay's placing only a high enough bid to
cover the previous bid and I thought it had made a mistake and hadn't
registered as high a bid as I intended so I tried unsuccessfully to make
the bid higher several times before I figured out how it worked.
