My father went through it, having to wear a Freshman Beanie at age 31, and him a combat vet. Go figure.
I went to a decent school system which had a Junior High which accommodated Grade Nine. So, I entered High School in Grade Ten, and immediately got a slot on the Debate Team and the Student Court and the Model UN (trust me: they had been warned and were waiting for me). I attended college at Washington & Lee which restricted such demeaning activities to the Fraternities but, what the hey, my folks were broke and I was socially inept, so I went four years as a member of the Gamma Delta Iota house. (Figure it out, guys: it is not hard. This is not a matter for Bletchley Park.)
A stepson-in-law is a member of the Coast Guard and, every time he is promoted, they seem to require him to go through some sort of initiation ceremony. I am appalled.
