The problem with the Tele-Mutar for portraits is that the minimum focusing distance is magnified along with the focal length, so it's a little more than five feet. And that is not close enough for a head shot.

I can assure that the Rollei TLR camera with the Rolleikin is more comfortable to take _vertical format_ portraits than any 35mm camera provided with tele lenses; things change for the horizontal format, the TLR becomes uncomfortable for this case. BTW I agree with you about the 6x6cm film area, it does not make sense to have a MF camera to use it for 35mm, however the Rolleikin is a funny and useful accesory to use sometimes.

Tele Mutars are a bit rare and expensive, Rollei recommended to use them at f 5.6 or smaller f stop, I have seen some very good portraits taken with the Tele Mutar, most of them using tripod.-

But by using the Rolleikin, you might as well be shooting a
Contax, Nikon or any other small format camera. The whole
point of the 'flex is the wonderful 6x6cm film area to
capture the image.

How often to Tele-Mutar's show up, and what do they
generally run?

I have the close up adapters, but they don't do the
flattering foreshortening that a true tele would for
portaits.

Cheers,
Thor

I agree if you are trying to take a portrait on the
minimal focusing distance point or very close to this point,
otherwise normal Rollei TLR lenses are very good for
portraits if you are not looking for a head study IMO.
BTW, the Rolleikin converts Rollei TLR normal lenses
into terrific -superb-short teles for portraits.
