Rugers,I must have modified dozens of those Rollei Graduated Filter holders to take Cokin or Lee grad filters in GRAY of varying densities. It involved cutting the width of the Lee or Cokin filter and fitting the side edges with tiny, thin "U" channels. What a PITA! I think I still have a few pieces of that channel in my Rollei accessory drawer.
Fortunately it did not involve any actual modification of the holder itself. I used them extensively with color film. The actual yellow Rollei grad filter was very weak.

I think you are talking about the graduated filter ("graduated sky filter" in the Rollei literature) and filter holder you can see here in the 3.5F: http://www.flickr.com/photos/itarfoto/3452366045/ I have used it a few times, in fact I have two samples only and it worked fine, I think it's more comfortable to use it with the camera on tripod 'cause you need to adjust the proportions between the clear glass part and the yellow filter part in the viewfinder lens first and then to fit the lens hood with the filter holder in the taking lens, it's pretty easy to throw the glass when you are sliding it. The main advantage is that you obtain a darker sky without to change the exposure time and the rest of the subject does not receive the filter effect increasing this way the effect on the sky. Anyway the effect is not dramatic (at least with the Rollei original glass)and more perceptible for considerable enlargements. I never had good experience using stitched and/ or damaged filters even closing the f/stop to use the good part of the filter, the sharpness loss is noticeable.
