Rollei image quality specifications for Xenotar and
Planar lenses were identical, as between Tessar and Xenar lenses too, but
there is no doubt each lens has its "personality". Zeiss lenses for the
Rollei TLR were a bit more expensive than Schneider lenses and Rollei TLR
cameras provided with Zeiss lenses were more expensive than identical
cameras provided with Schneider lenses due to the difference; this
situation, someway, created a false perception that Zeiss lenses were
better than Schneider lenses, but it was a matter of marketing decision,
the Zeiss company included in the price their longer tradition than
Schneider to manufacture high quality lenses, this was the real difference.
Carl zeiss and Schneider needed to reach identical Rollei specs and Zeiss
and Schneider lenses are made from the same Schott glass.

my judgement of the Planar being THE lens. I am not so sure anymore. The
Xenotar has a special something about it. I see it, more and more, whether
it be in the Rollei TLR examples, or in the lenses fitted to some of the
Retina cameras. As with any lens, there are photos that do not display it,
fully; but when everything is done right, the Xenotar renders a presence of
subject like no other. At least in my opinion.
