 A bit more info..
If you claim your salary as a single line on your personal income tax, there
are distinct expense minimums before you can claim certain deductions (i.e.,
"gates" of 2% of AGI, etc.).
However, if you are incorporated (or possibly a well defined sole
proprietorship), then every nickel can be claimed (i.e., mileage to/from
services, mileage for shopping trips to the music store, etc.), "uniforms"
(i.e., suits, tuxes, etc) as long as only worn for performances (if you are not
incorporated, this gets harder, as the IRS looks at it differently if it is not
truly a uniform type uniform...if it is "street clothes" then it does not meet
the definition of a "uniform."). One way around this definition is to put a
logo on the "uniform." Nothing like a Tux with the Rodgers "R" on it. Music
certainly is an expense, as well as CDs of other players (you have to keep
abreast of the industry), expenses incurred going to AGO, etc. If you are
incorporated, then you can pay yourself per diem while attending these, as well
as taking "dividends" (as opposed to taxable salary) are other advantages of
incorporation.
If the church pays you, then they are likely withholding 20% in witholding
taxes. If you are a SP, then you will have to withhold and pay "self
employment tax." If you are incorporated, then the church would pay 100% to
"John Jones, INC" and you would then work on making the income of the
corporation as near $0.00 as possible through careful tracking of expenses.
Again, see your tax professional.

Ed
