Interesting message taken from another pipe organ list...from a German
Organist talking of his father:

Then came the sad reality so often viewed in the Germany of his time:

"I am afraid that I am the only survivor of my class. All my buddies had
to
go to Russia and never came back. One of them was lucky: he was blind,
and
the draft didn't get him for that. A real luck; this young man -he was
several grades ahead when I entered the Conservatory- true was a gifted
musician; had great honors, and played at almost every alumni concert".

The name of this young man was Helmut Walcha. Father survived because he
was
taken war prisoner in France; no Russia for him. But he got handicapped-

partially paralyzed at the right hand, no concert career for him either.
So
much for remembrance.-
