I went to the National Cathedral in Washington DC once, and I was lucky to see the change ringers in action. What a thrill it was to see them doing their thing! It was a big room, with each rope coming down through a hole in the ceiling, in a large circle, with one person on each rope. Some of them had to stand on wooden blocks, and the head ringer told me they do this so all their eyes will be even, since some are taller than others. I don't remember how many there were, but there were at least 12. It started with one person pulling down, and she held it down until the person directly across from her pulled down. Then she let it go back up as the person to her right pulled down. It continued in this pattern for 20 minutes, so it takes one full revolution until the same pattern is repeated. The director told me it takes 10 minutes for the revolution to start over. Based on what I saw that day, imitating change ringing is not an easy task!
