Three decades ago an Allen dealer from another state entered this market, using
a local salesman who no longer worked for the local, authorized dealer. The
ending was not pretty. According to unsubstantiated gossip, the court enjoined
the salesman from selling musical instruments in this area for several
years--and organs forever. Don't mess with Allen and their legal department.
Steinway, either.
I might add that the local Allen dealer refused to provide warranty service on
a newly-installed Allen from the rogue dealer.
If they are encroaching on your territory and Rodgers won't do anything, then
you may have to act. I know, musicians prefer to do their own legal work,
which is as little as possible. We just aren't the confrontational sort...

We are seeing more and more
advertisements on the internet popping up such as this one -
a google ad that can be limited to a very specific area, but
instead is broadcast all over the US.
This may at first thought to be a
accident - until one notices that the ad also names a state
in which there are two dealers - and they list themselves as
the [state name] EXCLUSIVE DEALER for the entire
state.
In
the Rodgers dealer agreement, they all agree to not
advertise out of their assigned area.
As a consumer, how do you feel about
advertisements like this by Rodgers and other organ
dealers?
(before anyone suggests that this
should be taken up with Rodgers US, they were notified
months and months ago and taken no action.)
As a caution,
be sure to advise anyone interested in buying a new organ or
getting service to contact Rodgers at 503 648 4181 to
determine who their local Rodgers representatives are.
While buyers may buy from any dealer, only local
dealers are required to provide service in the
area.
