Hello Friends.

Just a quick reminder that Dr. Ernest Morrell will be coming to Naz to speak on
November 10th at 6:00pm in the the Arts Center - Room A14. For those of you who
are not familiar with his work, he is a Professor of English Education and
Director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education (IUME) at Teachers
College, Columbia University.

He will be speaking on a range of topics in education but his focus will be on
urban youth and participatory research. We will also have a youth panel of high
school students who will be responding to Dr. Morrell's talk and taking
questions from the audience. For those of you who teach on Thursday evenings,
please consider bringing your classes. Here is the specific info on his talk:

Youth Participatory Action Research , Civic Engagement, and Educational Reform:
Toward a National Model.

This talk will focus on the process and potential of engaging youth in
community based research through analyzing the work of the Council of Youth
Research (1999-2011), a twelve-year project where Los Angeles teens have
investigated issues related to educational justice and have presented their
work to elected officials, to educational researchers, and to the general
public via press conferences and social media. Morrell will explain the
principles of YPAR, he will share key examples of what this work can look like
in the age of participatory media, and he will discuss strategies for turning
the Los Angeles model into a national movement.

Hope you can make it!!!!!
