Barry and Maya Spector invite you
to our annual Day of the Dead Ritual
Saturday, October 29th, 9:30-6:30
Unitarian Church, San Rafael
=20
The Day of the Dead is a short period in time when the veil between the
worlds is very thin, when the spirits of the dead visit the earth.
Indigenous people from Bali to West Africa to Ireland to Central America
agree that there is a reciprocal relationship between the world of the
living and the unseen worlds; what is damaged in one world can be repaired
by the beings in the other. Thus, such cultures affirm that many of our
human problems actually result from the fact that we have not completely
allowed the spirits of the dead to move completely to their final homes in
the other world. And these cultures agree that the dead require two basic
things from us: beauty and our tears. It is the fullness of our grief,
expressed in communal celebrations of great sorrow and beauty that feeds th=
e
dead when they visit, so that when they return to the other world they can
be of help to us in return. And by feeding them with our grief, we are
allowed to drop some of our emotional burden.

Whether or not we have recently lost loved ones, we all carry a heavy load
of grief and stress simply by living in these times. When we can=B9t find way=
s
to drop the weight of this emotional burden, we can become hopeless, bitter
or numb.=20

Letting it go makes room for a new kind of imagination to enter. But the
release of these emotions requires a safe space and a caring community. It
is very difficult to do this work alone; indeed, one of the most common
sources of our sadness is the lack of community in our lives. But coming
together with this kind of intention, among people who know how to create a
ritual environment, is itself a way to =8B temporarily, at least =8B heal our
longing for community and build a model for the future.

We will take a full day to help each other remember our ancestors and our
personal and collective losses. The time of year when the veil between our
world and the unseen world is thin is an opportune time to complete any
unfinished business that prevents us from fully participating in life.

This will be a day of mourning and remembrance, but also of great beauty an=
d
celebration. There will be poetry, storytelling, drumming, altar-building
and chanting from many traditions, including African, Celtic, Mexican,
South American and Balinese. We have facilitated this ritual for ten years.

Who might be interested?

* Those who have lost loved ones in the past year or two.
* Those who personally feel the weight of the grief of the world: war,
poverty, disaster, environmental degradation, or the death of democracy.
* Those who are professional caregivers, therapists and healers, who always
hold a container for others but rarely get the chance to be held within a
ritual healing container.
* Those who feel stuck, who can=B9t seem to move into a new part of their
lives, or who suspect that some unresolved grief of childhood or old
relationship is keeping them from being fully present.
