You can use an external drive to store your audio and run the tracks, but you'll have to get a good drive, with low seek times, andpreferably one that doesn't have automatic sleep/power saver enabled. You can't change this with software, it's built into the hardware. A 5400 rpmdrive is still bad, because all your programs will run slower and takelonger to download to the ram and such, the data stream will be a bit slower because it take the drive longer to get the data wherever it needs to go; and you can't use an external drive to install the OS and such, though youcan hack the files and do it this is definitely not recommended. Shared video ram is also not that bad, however it can cause big problemswith a program like sonar that has a busy UI, not to mention that you will lose out on some ram. For example, if you have 2gb of ram, with say shared video memory, depending on how much ram the video card is hsaring, you will not get all 2gb, you might have only 1.5gb available to you if for examplethe video card share 512 or a better way to put it is if the video cardtakes 512mb from your system ram... I'd try and get dedicated ram for the card and a 7200 rpm drive. If you can't get dedicated ram because obviously this chipset for video is built into the motherboard and it doesn't allow for an additional graphics card, you'll have to upgrade the memory to over 4gb if possible, that way you can get a good amount of ram for your systemto work with.
