Good thoughts. I would also add that one should get a throw-away account or two through some service like Gmail for list subscriptions, newsletter subscriptions and for those ubiquitous forums. Also, for your main account, try to avoid using something obvious like the defaults Road Runner supplies: mlynn as an example; ditto for first.last -----Original Message----- From: real-eyes-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:real-eyes-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Jim Ellsworth Sent: Friday, February 10, 2012 9:47 AM To: real-eyes@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [real-eyes] Re: Spam? and what can be done about it? Hi Andrea, I believe changing providers is only a temporary fix. When it comes to spam I believe we cause most of our own problems. The best cure is to prevent it in the first place. Maybe 5-6 or so years ago we were getting quite a lot of spam so I called Brighthouse and some really nice customer service rep allowed me to change my master e mail address without affecting my entire account in any way. They told me they don't normally do this. Since that time I've learned quite a bit about preventing span. Rule number one is if you get spam messages that have an unsubscribe link do not under any circumstances use it. All you are doing is sending a response saying, "hello, send me more". Just mark it as junk so if they send more from the same address it will filter to the junk folder. Watch out what you subscribe to. Signing up for newsletters and the like can sometimes get you in trouble. All to often we don't bother to read the privacy policy when we probably should. I think that spyware and other types of malware are also at fault especially the type that "phones home" telling someone at the other end where you are. Actually, the type of spam protection that Roadrunner is using is probably the most affective once you have the problem itself. It can take time though to overcome the problem and it may never completely go away. I used to use a program called Cloudmark that worked like that and it worked remarkably well. Since changing my e mail address and being more careful about what I do and where I go as well as what I sign up for I now only get maybe 6 spam messages a week and I can live with that. I don't respond to any of them in any way and simply filter them to junk. Whether or not you switch providers or not you might want to try to figure out ways to prevent this from happening again. Oh, and I never send my contact info like e mail address or phone numbers etc to a public list. People are out there harvesting e mail addresses from lists just for the purpose of spam. You know that is the weird thing, I used to never have a problem and it just started with no obvious changes on my system. That is why I went to rr about it. This is just one more excuse for me to run right over to Google when they start providing services here in KC. I am under no contract and am free to go when ever I want.
