If we do the highlighted, it fits with Richmond better and folks will be able
to see the trains without the expense of a shed.

Or you don't put a station over the tracks. Have a train shed with a
facade of the rear of the station at the back of the module.
Or using the rear of the station facade you run a concourse from the
station out over the tracks.
Lots of possibilities.

I think the ability to view the trains in the station would depend
on the type of station. If a structure like Broad Street
Station and corresponding platforms, then you have good views of the
trains in the station; if like Main Street, then a train shed would
be with glass roof would be prudent to have good views of the trains
in the station.

If the tracks are going to be under the station, why do we
need a shed? Not saying it wouldn't look nice, but . . .

You could put a train shed over it with a plexiglas
roof like this guy builds:

Seems like we are talking about spending alot of
money on a part of the layout that the public
can not see and enjoy. Can we install
plexiglass so the public can enjoy what is going on
down below ?
The public needs to enjoy watching a train pull
into the station, enjoy all the station
sound effects of arriving & departing
trains and then watch the train pull out with all
the sounds included in some of our engines.

I like this much better also. This is more
like what I thought was planned for this
project. We'll need to work out the details and
decide on the overall length of the modules, (and
how to match up the other side of the layout), but
it looks great.

Very nice, Ken. I like it.

I'm just throwing some ideas out
here, but here's another
variation on a pull through
yard under the station.
Still 18' of modules but
reduced the width to 36". In order
for the switches not to land on the
module joints the outer modules are
6'-6 and the center module is 5'.
Reading from bottom to top:
Tracks 1 & 2 are the mains
Track 3 has about 11' of storage
(6- 21" scale length cars)
Track 4 has about 9' of storage
(Maybe 5-21" scale length
cars)
Track 5 has about 7' of storage
( 3 1/2 - 21" scale length
cars)
Track 6 is a runaround track. I
figure to get the most
cars under the station you
would pull in, decouple
the engine, back it up to
the runaround track and park it
in one of the stub end sidings.
When you want to pull the train
out you simply take the engine out
and couple back up to the
train. You could also use
the stub tracks for
express or RPO cars.
Of course you can get more
15" or 18" cars into the
yard. I was just looking
at worst case. Again I'm
using Atlas switches. I
think Ross switches will cut down
the distance between tracks about
1/2".
