The VTC set out their sign at the event the club participated in this past
March.
At the end of the event the sign was gone. The County picked it up. When
called the County said you are not getting it back.

When my wife was involved with the Chesterfield county Master Gardner
program, she had some dealings with the GBGH. She remembered the GBGH put a
wooden sign out advertising something that was going on and the County got
after them about the sign. The last thing we want to do is to get the GBGH
in trouble.
A few years ago there was a self appointed sign cop who attended county
council meetings and stirred up a lot of problems about what he felt were
uncontrolled signs along the roads, on telephone poles, and so on. It
became his crusade and caused the County to come out with a restrictive
sign code. He is from Midlothian and mainly complained about signs along
and near Midlothian Turnpike. I don't know whether he is still active or
not, but we don't need someone like him complaining to the Police or County
officials.

If you put the signs out, be sure you have extras made. My experience has
been that localities are under no obligation to alert the owners to remove
the signs; they'll just remove them without a word to anyone. Case in
point that had a happy ending: at a VTC train show at Hanover Academy in
Ashland, a sign was placed on Route 54 where it was regulated and it was
removed without a word. The happy ending is that Jim Donlon (formerly of
Train Town in Ashland) was able to recover the sign from the town
authorities without any problem. Localities can be moody, so tread
carefully.

There are regulations. HOWEVER. We have been putting up signs all over the
place for years. How many times have we been called out on this? I'd say
put the signs out. If someone says something, just say sorry and pull them
in. What kind of Scrooge is going to bust on a bunch of model train guys
during Christmas???
