Broadway Limited announced the L-1's as a limited production run and they had
already committed to the number of units to be produced. Late last week they
formally announced them for sale. The whole run was sold out on Tuesday. Time
to do these in O.

In 1947 the C&O was preparing for the introduction of their new Chessie
streamlined train, and needed stylish new motive power for the secondary
sections, running from Charlottesville, Va. to Newport News and from Ashland,
Ky. to Louisville. A fancy and expensive turbine locomotive like the ones on
the mainline section of the train wasn't necessary, so the railroad decided
to take their newest Pacific type locomotives, the F-19 class, and rebuild
them into streamlined Hudson types for this service, classified L-1 and
retaining the numbers 490-494. The result was a poppet valve equipped
streamlined locomotive that could run with the best passenger engines on the
railroad. Initially painted a striking yellow-orange with stainless steel
trim, the four locomotives were repainted yellow in the early 1950s to better
match the new Pullman-Standard streamlined cars delivered at the time. The
L-1s served the railroad well, and the last steam powered passenger train to
run on the C&O was powered by and L-1 running between Newport News and
Charlottesville.
Broadway Limited is producing a new model of this distinctive C&O locomotive,
and it is extremely well done. It very nicely captures the distinctive shape
of the streamlined shroud, not always easy to do. It captures all the visible
details on the prototype, and some of the not so visible ones. It is also
equipped with a DCC sound decoder that is capable of operating on DC current
as well.

C&O acquired 1,500 AAR standard 40-foot, 50ton boxcars in 1937. Of those,
just 100 had what is termed "Diamond-and-Dot" embossed pattern on their ends.
This is also known as "Deco" pattern and was only used on these 100 cars.
They were in service well into the 1970s, and have become an iconic design
because of the unusual appearance of the ends. These cars would be ideal for
