Dr. Z -
I have been through many pricing theories, but the one I'm most comfortable with is:

cost of materials
+ time (x per hour)
= total

Then add 30-50% to gallery or business

The reason for this is simple - if you have your work in a gallery, they will charge 30-50%, or double the price, including the frame~. If you don't charge this percentage, you will be undercutting yourself (which most people do all the time, btw) and it gives you NO room for reducing the price, should someone want a discount for purchasing multiples, as is common. Anything over what you pay yourself goes into your business, so the 30% is actually necessary. The cost you charge per hour is completely up to you, but it's easier to go up than down, and is healthy. If you're printing them and/or photoshopping them, of course it should be more than if you send a CD without manipulation, etc. Include hours on the track waiting for the shot, or charge for a full day if it's appropriate.

The other way to estimate is to compare the prices of your peers. As a beginner, this is difficult, but look online and talk to friends until you hit a price that you can live with. This is not scientific enough for me, as I want to be able to tell someone just how I arrived at the price, and clients like to know how many hours or what the cost is to create a work. I also like to know exactly what it's costing ME, so I don't end up giving the work away, especially a painting. With photos it's a bit different, of course, due to the multiple nature of the work.

Hope that helps.
And be sure to keep records! My artist's bio has several big clients now, but it took time to build it. Most artists will donate works or reduce prices to get some of the big names on there. We'd all like to charge what the famous artists charge, but it takes time to get to that point with consistency and integrity.

Aleta

Herr Z;
The others are more conversant with pricing than I, but do you want to get rich on the first sale, or maybe have some repeat and word-of -mouth business, somewhere down the road?? C.

Subject: [ratpack] I have a question

All,

I have a question. I have been asked for a couple of photos for a brochure from Ian Lacy, they run the #6, #12 & #22 Formula Mazdas. Ian is asking how much for a couple of photo's, besides credit for the photos any ideas on what to charge for something like this?
