My current area of expertise is Python (used to use C/C++ a while back).
I can work on the task downloading and reporting aspect to start off with.

Your vctools looks as if it would be a good base for VideoCore
interrogation. Can it be run safely on a Pi that's currently in use? I'm
wondering if we could use idle-time on a running Pi to probe the
VideoCore. If it might cause artefacts on the display, is it possible to
take a snapshot of the state before the probe and restore it after?
