Hi, these are good points. I would say though that the virus may change some
things we’ll have to see. Another advantage at least until the economic
shutdown we’re in now there was a real shortage of talent in the field so it
was and probably will be again soon competitive and companies may make an
exception and allow more remote employees. I also think that more people who
have figured out now they can work from home will demand it.
That being said though what you say makes a lot of sense. Companies
will usually advertise in job listings whether they offer relocation packages.
I actually took advantage of one of these when I moved to California years ago.

for the job and if I am offered the position sometimes you can have them pay
to help you move. I had a job like that once. Another job paid for me to
fly to them for the interview. But once you are in your new town or city
then it's the great blind jigsaw puzzle you have to fit together to get used
to your new surroundings.

And yeah, you'd think there would be plenty of telecommuting options
for entry level programming positions, but apparently I've either been
looking in the wrong places or telecommuting isn't something employers
like to offer newbies or advertise to potential applicants. Though,
with how many companies are reportedly switching as much of their
operations as possible to work from home setups, perhaps one silver
lining of Covid19 will be a shift towards telecommuting being more
mainstream. I think I would still prefer having a physical workplace
where I interact with coworkers face-to-face on a regular basis and I
still want to leave the small town I live in for somewhere with viable
mass and paratransit and reasons to actually get out of the house when
there aren't reasons to stay shut in, but telecommuting could do a lot
for helping me save up for such a move and go a long ways towards
making the higher cost of living of the big city more manageable.
