I know this is old, but I have made some progress on building this. I have
a basic inventory I believe ready. It just logs basic info such as part
type, part number, notes, quantity, etc. and will display in groups of the
same part type. It follows the view of Patch Cables for the most part. I
would like to add an object compatibility layer and display Spare Parts as
a selectable tab for an object which would list the stock of compatible
parts, and add a log to the object stating $PART part was pulled from
inventory and installed in $OBJECT. If people have an interest for it as
is, I can do some cleanup and submit a pull request on github. I have no
idea how long it will take until I can finish this. It took me much longer
than anticipated just to get to this point.
It would move configuration down onto another row on the homepage and add
Spare Parts to the menu. This is not really a plugin but would be a
modification of existing code. I am also not sure how the owners feel about
adding an item to the home page which throws off the balance.

Same here, we created a low rack with shelves only and placed there
