Hi Cristian

If your survey is based upon a stratified random design with separate
strata (areas) with different densities, then the mean CPUE in that stratum
should be reflective of the density in that strata assuming a common survey
catchablity (q) over all strata. Indeed, even in a situation where you
don't have strata, the overall mean is reflective of abundance, just with
higher variance. It is pretty standard in stock assessment to use one q per
survey (as long as it is standardized - vessel, gear, strata, timing etc)
with the survey covering a range of strata. Allowing q to change by density
implies a power function between CPUE and abundance which can be tested
for. The most important issue is ensuring that your survey is consistent
over time and space. Also, there may be changes in the ocean environment
which cause a temporal/spatial change in Q. Again, this can be tested for
although adjusting for this would require external information to
parameterize the relationship.

Hope this helps.

Bob

Hi Laura, yes, but if we assume different catchabilities, we could obtain
as result, a large biomass in a zone with low density but with high
catches, because q is just a scale factor.... I mean,,, the local density
migth reflect the spatial agregation and availability to fishing gear. Can
be this possible?. Thanks for your feedback.

Can you assume the spatial and temporal aggregations of shrimp in the two
independent zones is the same? If not, I’m not sure you can assume the
catchabilities are equivalent. See, for example Ellis and Wang (2007;

Hi,

I'm working in stock assessment of a shrimp. There are several years of
survey information and I am considering the density (kg/km2) as abundance
indicator. I am using an integrated catch-at-length model that also
includes the fishery informarion.  Usually when we do the assessment, we
consider two independent zones and this means the catchability is different
by zone. Nevertheless if we believe this abundance index is a good
representation of local densities, Can we suppose the catchabilities should
be differents?. I am thinking that could be better consider a single
catchability, the same for both zones, so the local abundances will have a
better representation.

Thanks a lot by your comments

Cristian
