This might be slightly off topic:
Minutes after I sent my last post I checked the Schlumpf homepage
http://www.schlumpf.ch/uni_engl.htm
and discovered that they finally have started to manufacture their
two-geared unicycle hub. A small step perhaps but I think it looks
promising.
Hub and uni are sold as one unit and something tells me this will be an
expensive unicycle!

... correctly this hub has a gear ratio of 1:3 and a multi geared
version is under development.
You could make very compact bikes and foldables with these hubs. Hey,
I would even consider mounting a multi geared hub on my unicycle! But
judging from videos showing people riding unicycles with freewheel
hubs has convinced me this makes a VERY unstable ride. So I would
probably add a tiny front wheel for support.
