As self-appointed Miss Manners for american english usage, I'll chime in here:

we mostly speak of suspension "travel", I think. It's more abstract than the 
German "Federweg", which evolks (sp. ;-) ) a road which may be traveled-- as if 
English speakers didn't need a road to get steel to travel --  <humph!> ;-]
