Hi Howard,
this is an extremely nice looking trike! And a genius folding mechanism! Well, 55kg is hefty, good luck with slimming the trike. I hope you have no hills around your place;-).

Did you build in fibre glas or carbon?
Every year, when the nasty German Winter approaches, I think about building a python velomobile with a self supporting fibre glas shell. Carbon is just a bit on the costly side, specially when you don't know if the result is any good.

Gerald

Hi all,

In response to the message and youtube video of the trike I posted,
thanks for your advice and comments. I hope that the hype and foolery
didn't upset those who take their cycling very seriously! Thanks Tiha
for the IT advice. I tried to load some pictures and a video (without
music ) Dirk, but am afraid I failed. There must be a trick to that too!
Thanks Jurgen for doing the honors and making it possible to view the
video clip.

And so to get down to business. Paul asked for some specifications. The
wheel base is 1050mm, width 750mm, height with wheels on 580mm, without
400mm, openned length 1710mm, folded length 910mm, BB height 430mm, seat
height 230mm, box clearance 180mm, BB to lumbar support of backrest
1020mm. For those interested in the mechanics of PSI the Q length
(pedal centre to midline) is 140mm and the pedal crank length is 180mm.
Q length is something worth discussion as it must be a significant
factor in PSI.

And so to the vexing problem of weight, especially for an air traveller
like me. The front section was laid up in a mould and is very light but
the addition of 2 gearboxes, the Shimano Alfine hub and the Schlumpf
Mountain drive BB made the weight of this 17.40Kg. The rear section is a
hand layup rather than a mould production, and consequently more heavy
than I had hoped. Also the pivot mechanism and folding hinge is of heavy
gauge stainless steel, and weighs about 3.5kg, which is unnecessarily
over-engineered, I think.. The rear wheels weigh 4 kg. Deducting these
from the overall weight of the rear section (37.5kg) leaves the box
weighing a hefty 30kg. I think it would be around 10-12kg if made in a
mould and with vacuum bagging to minimise the resin component. So
current total weight is 55.4Kg !! I need it to be half that, so once the
design is fully tested I will make a mould and then try again.

CHeers Howard
