Crafting your career - Invitation On Wednesday October 30, the Rathenau Instituut and the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) are jointly organizing an event for scientific researchers, Crafting your Career. We would like to invite you for this interactive afternoon, that will deal with opportunities and barriers for researchers in the first stages of their scientific career. There is a growing demand on researchers to perform, by publishing papers in prestigious journals and acquiring funding from scarce resources. This focus on output performance, often termed a 'rat race', seems to distract from other competencies needed or desired to be a good scientist. How do you deal with this focus, and how can you make productive use of other skills and qualities? The event aims at young researchers (PhD students, post-docs, assistant professors) from different scientific and scholarly fields, that will likely benefit from a balanced discussion about the pros and cons of recent trends in research evaluation. Crafting Your Career is an opportunity to discover the many ways to excel in science and beyond. What are your ambitions, what are your opportunities in science or elsewhere, and how can you craft your career beyond the rat race? Learn from experts, be inspired by role models, discuss your experiences, and get practical tips and insights. Program The event will be held in English. from 12:30h Reception and lunch 13.30h Opening address by prof. dr. Hans Clevers, president of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) 13.45h Research evaluation and career motivation: An Introduction 14.00h Duo interviews with Spinoza-laureate prof. dr. Jan Zaanen and dr. Ruth Müller, expert on scientific careers 14.45h Career Fair, including coffee and tea 15.45h Panel debate featuring prof. dr. Franciska de Jong (i.a. board member NWO), dr. Bart Penders (postdoc researcher), prof. dr. Jaap Goudsmit (director and chief scientist of the Crucell Vaccine Institute), prof. dr. Richard Rogers (University Professor University of Amsterdam) 16.45h Closing address by dr. Barend van der Meulen (Rathenau Instituut) 17.00h Drinks Participation is free of charge, and includes lunch and closing drinks. The event will take place in Utrecht, at walking distance from Central Station. Test yourself Some people like to work on their own, others draw inspiration from people in their environment. Some have a clear picture in mind of the position they want to achieve in ten years' time, others are mainly driven by a complex puzzle they want to solve.
